A practice group at Winston & Strawn that focuses on electronic discovery is carving out a lucrative market niche.

While many major law firms look to outside contractors to help sort through the mass of email and other electronic documents that must be reviewed in corporate litigation, Winston is not only handling its own e-discovery but finding that its expertise is useful to other law firms, practice leader John Rosenthal tells the Washington Post (reg. req.).

And, with 60 percent of litigation revenue attributable to discovery, the practice group has a bright future, he says. Although e-discovery currently accounts for only about $20 million of the firm’s $741 million or so in annual revenue, the practice is growing at a double-digit rate.

Document review centers housed in New York and Washington, D.C., routinely are staffed by 25 to 50 lawyers hired specifically for those jobs, and if there is a need to add more, it isn’t difficult to find them: Around 400 applicants applied when Winston recently needed to hire 10 new document review lawyers, Rosenthal told the newspaper.
